Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s Tennis opens up spring 2021 season with a shutout win over Plattsburgh 9-0

Plattsburgh, NY – Yesterday the Women's Tennis Team came off a 14-month hiatus and has been 18-months since their championship final appearance in SUNYAC's.  They shook of some opening match jitters and picked up right where they left off coming away with a very impressive SUNYAC conference opening season match toppling the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals 9-0.

In the double's competition the Red Dragon women only lost five-games total when they won all three of the doubles matches.   Senior/Captin Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and junior Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) lost the opening game but then won eight out of the next 10-games cruising to an 8-3 victory in the top slot.  In the second spot juniors Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and Rebecca MacDonald joined together again for the second season in a row and won by a bagel toppling the Cardinals duo 8-0.  At the third flight juniors Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) and Ariel Loucks (Averill Park/Averill Park) a pair of high school teammates had little trouble in clinching the win with a score 8-2 ensuring a 3-0 lead for the Red Dragons going into the singles competition.

Fraser was almost perfect in winning the top position 6-1, 6-0.  Lipscomb duplicated the same score in the second tier and had little trouble setting back her Cardinals opponent.  Carswell made it a triple duplication in score in the third singles position also winning 6-1, 6-0.  Making her debut in a Red Dragons uniform was freshman Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) in the fourth spot and completely shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-0.  Macdonald dropped only one-game 6-0, 6-1 with an impressive victory in the fifth singles position.  Finally, also playing her first match as an Oneonta Red Dragon freshman Jayden Carillo clinched a 9-0 shutout of the Cardinals and she tallied a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Noteworthy were exhibition wins for senior/captain Gianna Papini (Hewlett/George W. Hewlett) and new comer junior Sarah Sampson (Albany/Albany).

Up next for the Red Dragons is a home matchup against the SUNY New Paltz Hawks.  The Red Dragons lost to them in the SUNYAC final in October of 2019.  The Red Dragon will try to get some revenge in what promises to be a heated matchup in women's tennis on Wednesday, April 21 at the Heissan Tennis Courts beginning at 3 PM.
