Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball holds off Plattsburgh

Five players reach double figures

A Quick Look
Five players scored in double figures tonight, as the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team picked up a road win at Plattsburgh 88-82.  The win for Oneonta raises its overall record to 5-2 and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.  The loss for the Cardinals dropped them to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

"Tonight was a hard fought win," said Head Coach Cameron Conover.  "We gave great effort and had five players score in double figures. Despite turning the ball over too much we found a way to win. We have to start taking care of the ball better. Tomorrow will be another tough test for us against a very good Potsdam team."

The Inside Story
Oneonta held its halftime lead in the first five minutes of the second half before Plattsburgh scored nine unanswered to take its first lead since late in the first half.  The Red Dragons were still trailing 60-57 at the 12:29 mark when they put together a quick 8-3 spurt over the next two minutes capped by a three-pointer by senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel) giving Oneonta the lead for good.

Derice then capped a 14-4 run over the next six minutes to give Oneonta an 11-point lead at 78-67 with just over four minutes to go in regulation.  The Red Dragons held off the Cardinals down the stretch converting 4-of-6 free throws including 3-of-4 by junior Dylan Trombley (Moriah, NY/Moriah).

Oneonta didn't miss many shots in the first half shooting at a 60 percent clip.  The Red Dragons dominated the paint scoring 30 of its 42 points in close.  Senior Taylor Mason (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) led the way scoring 10 points on 4-of-4 from the floor.

Oneonta was all over the Cardinals in the opening five minutes building a 17-2 lead.  Derice and classmate Sean Nolan (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) along with junior Michael Ortale Jr. (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem Central) each scored four points during the opening run.

Plattsburgh countered with 17 unanswered points to take its first lead of the game at 19-17 with just under 11 minutes remaining.  The two teams then took turns with the lead over the next couple of minutes before the Cardinals assumed the lead and held on to it for the next four minutes.  Oneonta then closed the half with a 14-3 burst capped by a Dylan Trombley (Moriah, NY/Moriah) three-pointer with three seconds left.

Just the Stats
Oneonta outrebounded Plattsburgh 42-31 including grabbing 16 offensive rebounds that led to 21 second-chance points.  The Red Dragons finished the game with a decided advantage in the paint outscoring the Cardinals 54-30.
