In a battle between city rivals tonight, it was the visiting Hartwick Hawks that bested SUNY Oneonta 52-41 in non-conference women's action. The loss drops the Red Dragons to 0-2 in the early going while the Hawks move to 2-0.

The Inside Story
Oneonta trailed at halftime 19-18, before opening the third quarter with 7-2 run to gain the advantage 25-21. The run was capped by a three-pointer by junior
Margaret Nardelli (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham).

The Hawks countered with 10 unanswered points to grab a lead at 31-25 with 40 seconds remaining in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Daniella DeBiase put Hartwick ahead at 26-25 with just over two minutes to go in the stanza. Senior
Brittany Claud (West Babylon/West Babylon) converted an and-1 on the final possession of the quarter to bring Oneonta back to within three points entering the fourth period.

In the fourth period, Oneonta made just 4-of-12 shots while Hartwick made 6-of-16 including a pair from behind the arc. The Hawks continued to build its lead throughout the final period with its largest margin coming at the final buzzer.

The two teams exchanged the lead in the first half with Oneonta leading 10-9 at the end of the first quarter before Hartwick grabbed a 19-18 lead entering halftime. The Hawks built a seven-point advantage with 4:34 left in the second quarter before the Red Dragons closed with an 8-2 run to pull within one point at the break. Sophomore

Oneonta finished the contest shooting 21 percent while the Hawks shot it at 31 percent. Both teams made four shots from behind the arc. The Hawks held a 51-42 rebound edge including 16-12 on the offensive glass.
