Volleyball ends 2021 with pair of victories

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team closed out its season today at home by winning a pair of matches versus Baruch and city-rival Hartwick.  The two wins for the Red Dragons complete a 6-18 season.
 
The Inside Story
In the opening match of the day, Oneonta swept Baruch (25-14, 25-18, 25-22).  The Red Dragons had control of the match from the opening rally trailing only twice in the entire match.
 
Leading 9-8 in the first set, Oneonta put together a 10-1 run to win going away.  Sophomore Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor/Hendrick Hudson) led the charge with four kills.
 
Oneonta jumped out to an 11-4 advantage in set No. 2 led by sophomore Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) and senior Ashlee Mazzella (Warwick/Warwick Valley) who combined for eight kills.
 
Baruch kept it close in the third set battling point for point until tying the score for the last time at 21-21.  The match ended on a service ace from sophomore Sophia Gerace (Pearl River/Pearl River).
 
Oneonta fell behind two sets to none in their match against Hartwick before battling all the way back to force a deciding fifth set, which they won 15-13.
 
Oneonta jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the fifth set before Hartwick went on a 7-2 run to gain the lead 7-5.  A kill by sophomore Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills/Cornwall) evened the score at nine apiece.  The Red Dragons took the lead for good on an ace by freshman Isabella Miller (Ardsley/Ardsley) followed by a kill by Mazzella.  The match ended on a kill by Davis.
 
Just the Stats
Christie led the offensive attack today combining for 27 kills.  Davis combined for 21 kills to go with nine blocks.  Junior Kayla Rende (Wantagh/Wantagh) recorded 39 assists while Gerace tallied 32 assists.  Defensively, Oneonta was led by junior Carsyn Rachuta (Holbrook/Sachem North) who collected 38 digs on the day.
