A Quick Look
In a match that needed more than 110 minutes of play to be decided, Oswego State (5-6-5) edged the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team (10-3-3) in a shootout, 5-4. Oswego eliminated Oneonta from the SUNYAC tournament and will face Cortland in the semifinals.
Â
"It's always a tough way to end your season with a shootout, especially for our seniors," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "Today was a reflection on our season, and for all our possession and play, we just weren't able to score in the big games when we needed it most. Oswego were great today, and we wish them well in the next round."
Â
The Inside Story
The Red Dragons orchestrated the pace of play and struck first in the 27
th minute. The Lakers had a throw in deep from their side of the field and was intercepted by senior forward
Matt Howe (Hopewell Junction/John Jay), Howe crossed the ball to junior midfielder
Ethan Brunell (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), and Brunell scored from the top of the box. Â
Â
Oneonta had five more shots before halftime, three on goal, but were all saved by Brian Terra.
Â
Despite Oneonta's tempo, Oswego knotted the game up in the 64
th minute. With a scrum of players from both teams in front of junior goalie
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), Kieran Gilroy passed to Hajoon Lee at the top of the box, Lee was able to use the players towards his advantage and scored on the left side of the goal.
Â
For the rest of regulation and both overtime periods, neither team could break the 1-1 tie, forcing a shootout.
Â
Through the first four rounds of shootout each player on both sides made their attempt. In the final round junior midfielder
Malcolm Swett (Riverhead/Riverhead) hit the crossbar and Brendan Murphy made his attempt for Oswego, advancing them to the semifinals. Â
Â
Just the Stats
The Red Dragons outshot the Lakers 24-9, 12-1 in the first half, and had a 12-5 advantage on corners. Hanna recorded five saves, and Terra finished with six.
