Panthers claw past baseball in extra innings

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team dropped an 11-7 decision in ten innings to Greenville University on Tuesday morning at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida.

The Inside Story
Ryan McGrane (Plainedge/Plainedge) would get the Oneonta offense started when he led off the game with a triple down the right field line, later scoring on a wild pitch. With runners on second and third, Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) drove in Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) with a sacrifice fly to center to put the Red Dragons ahead 2-0.

Oneonta added to their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jake Barrett (Smithtown/St. Anthony's) got the inning started with a leadoff double to left. Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) plated Barrett with an RBI single to make the scored 3-0. McGee made his way home on a failed pickoff attempt and a pass ball, upping the Oneonta lead to 4-0.

Greenville knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth when they scored four runs on three hits and a pair of Oneonta errors. The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the sixth to go in front 6-4. With runners on second and third, Greenville's Sam Hodges roped a single off the leg of Oneonta pitcher Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun), allowing one run to score. An attempt to get the runner out a first sailed down the line, allowing the second run to score.

Oneonta battled back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-6 lead. The Red Dragons pulled within one when four batters reached base after getting hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) doubled to center, scoring Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) and Mark Minicozzi (Rome/Rome Free Academy) to put Oneonta back in front.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Greenville tied the game at 7-7 on a two-out error with the bases loaded. The Panthers secured the win with four runs on four hits in the top of the tenth inning.

Just the stats.
Oneonta starter Zachary Vavasour (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) toss the first five and two-thirds innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out three. Michael Losak (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) suffered the loss after giving up three earned runs in two and two-thirds innings while striking out five Panthers. Jake Barrett (Smithtown/St. Anthony's) led the Oneonta offense with two doubles and a run scored. Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) drove in three runs while Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) and Sean McGlynn (New Hartford/New Hartford) scored two runs apiece.
