Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball cruises to a 16-5 win over RPI

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta baseball team pounded 14 hits en route to a 16-5 win over Rensselaer Wednesday morning at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.

The Inside Story
Oneonta broke the game open with seven runs on six hits in the top of the third inning. With runners on second and third, James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) lined out to centerfield, allowing Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) to scamper home from third. Senior Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead.  With runners on the corners, David Deberardinis (Fishkill/John Jay) double to left center to scoring John Zinko (Wallkill/Wallkill). Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) kept the line moving with a two-run single up the middle to make it 6-0. Oneonta capped off the inning when Lezette scored from third when the RPI catcher threw the ball into centerfield while trying to cut down Patrick McGee's (Mahopac/Mahopac) theft of second base.

Oneonta put the game out of reach with nine more runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 16-0 advantage. With the bases loaded, RPI uncorked a wild pitch allowing James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) to score from third. James Zupo (Massapequa/Massapequa) followed with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 10-0. With the bases load, Patrick McGee (Mahopac/Mahopac) hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Zupo. The Red Dragons would score two more runs on a throwing error by the RPI shortstop. Oneonta capped off their scoring with RBI's from Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal) and Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville).

Just the stats.
Oneonta starter Michael Dunne (Stony Point/Albertus Magnus) earned his first win of the season after allowing just two hits in five innings of work. David Deberardinis (Fishkill/John Jay) paced the Oneonta offense with a 3-for-5 performance with an RBI and two runs scored. Matthew McAllister (Vestal/Vestal), Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville), James Zupo (Massapequa/Massapequa) and Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) finished with two hits apiece. Lamonica also drove in three runs while Zupo and Lezette each had a pair of RBI's.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action tomorrow, March 12th when they battle Anna Maria in a doubleheader beginning at 1:30pm at historic Sanford Memorial Stadium.
