A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team defeated Farmingdale State 18-8 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. The win evens the Red Dragons record to 1-1 on the year.
The Inside Story
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) led Oneonta with a team-high four goals while
Christen Patalano (Mineola/Kellenberg Memorial) and
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) each tallied a hat-trick.
Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) and
Deirdre Buckley (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) chipped in with a pair of goals while
Alexis Romano (North Babylon/North Babylon),
Rachel Morris (East Greenbush/Columbia),
Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) and
Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) also found the back of the net for Oneonta.
The two teams exchanged goals to start the game with
Christen Patalano (Mineola/Kellenberg Memorial) tickling the twine three minutes into regulation. After Farmingdale tied the game, Oneonta went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-1 lead. Farmingdale responded with three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Tessa Hughes (Delmar/Bethlehem Central) ended the Rams run with a goal off a free-position shot.
Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) wrapped up the first half scoring on a pass from
Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) to give the Red Dragons a 9-4 lead at the break.
Oneonta broke the game open with three straight goals to start the second half. After
Megan Foiles (Pearl River/Pearl River) scored on a feed from
Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber),
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) scored while the Red Dragons were down a player to make the score 11-4. Calabrese followed with a free-position goal just 25 seconds later to up the Oneonta lead to 12-4. After Farmingdale scored on a man advantage,
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) netted back-to-back goals to increase the Oneonta lead to 14-5. After another
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) goal and a pair of
Christen Patalano (Mineola/Kellenberg Memorial) makers, freshman
Alexis Romano (North Babylon/North Babylon) netted the first collegiate goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation.

Oneonta was 20-for-21 on clear attempts on the day with a 14-13 advantage on draw controls. The Red Dragons gathered 24 ground balls while causing 20 turnovers.
