Women's basketball clinches playoff spot

Freshman Nardelli lifts Red Dragons versus Oswego

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team clinched a playoff spot tonight with its 61-49 win at home against Oswego.  The win for the Red Dragons was its fourth straight and raised its overall record to 11-12 and 8-8 in the SUNYAC.

The Inside Story
After a tight opening quarter, Oneonta began to pull away in the second quarter outscoring the Lakers 23-9.  Nardelli and junior Maya Bernsley (Monroe/Monroe Woodbury) led the way with six points each in the quarter.  Nardelli and Bernsley led the Red Dragons tonight with 12 and 10 points respectively off the bench.

Oneonta led for nearly 38 of the 40 minutes in the contest.  Oswego (6-16, 2-14) tied the score three times, all in the first quarter.  Senior Quincey Zimmerman kept the Lakers close with a pair of three-pointers.  Zimmerman led all scorers in the game with 14 points.

Oneonta increased its lead by one with a 12-11 third quarter.  Freshman Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) paced the Red Dragons with four points.

The Lakers did make a push in the final quarter, but it was too little, too late, as Oneonta secured the victory and a spot in the SUNYAC tournament.

Just the Stats
Oneonta controlled the backboard outrebounding Oswego 41-25.  Nardelli and Dobrovosky each collected seven boards to lead Oneonta.  The Red Dragons shot 45 percent from the floor and made 7-of-16 from behind the arc including four by Nardelli.  Oneonta's reserves outscored Oswego's 42-0.

What's Next
Oneonta will complete its regular season this weekend against Potsdam and Plattsburgh.  Playoff parings will be released Saturday night at the conclusion of all games.
