The 2011-12 Women's Basketball Team won the SUNYAC title and qualified for only the third time for the NCAA tournament in program history. The conference title was the program's third overall and its first since 2001. The Red Dragons finished with an overall record of 19-9 including 14-4 in the SUNYAC.
At two different times during the season, Oneonta won 8-of-10 games entering the conference tournament. After a comfortable 53-40 win against Oswego in the opening game of the tournament, the Red Dragons traveled west to Buffalo to face New Paltz in the semifinals. One week prior, the two squads waged battle to determine the No. 2 seed in the tournament, which went to New Paltz with an overtime victory. In a second straight overtime game between the two, this one went in Oneonta's favor 66-63.
In the championship game, tournament MVP Samantha Szkotak poured in 20 points while grabbing 11 boards. Classmate Madison Slagle scored 10 points and collected 12 rebounds and earned All-Tournament selection as did sophomore Kristin Pappalardo.
In the opening round of the NCAA tournament, Oneonta traveled to King's College where they ran into a solid defensive squad. The Monarchs held the Red Dragons to a season low 26 percent from the floor and Oneonta managed to make only 2-of-19 from behind the arc in a 56-42 defeat.
Szkotak and Slagle both earned All-Conference honors being named to the First and Second Team, respectively.
As a team, Oneonta outscored its opponents 1632-1482. They were 43rd in Division III in holding opponents to 52.9 points per game. They were ranked 14th in the country in field goal percentage defense at 31.5 percent.
