The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team hung tough for three quarters before a big final quarter by rival Cortland gave them a lopsided 69-41 victory this afternoon in SUNYAC action. The loss for Oneonta drops them to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the SUNYAC while Cortland moves to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

The Inside Story
Oneonta held a 3-2 lead early after a three-pointer by freshman
Lauren Obermayer (East Greenbush/Columbia). Just over one-minute later, senior
Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) converted 1-of-2 from the line to push the lead to 4-2. Unfortunately, that would be the last lead of the game for Oneonta, as Beth Bonin made a three to give Cortland the lead at 5-4. Another trey by Bonin tacked onto the Cortland advantage enroute to an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Oneonta had its best quarter of the game in the second outscoring Cortland by a slim 14-13 margin to trail only 31-22 at halftime. A 10-2 run midway through the stanza by Oneonta cut its deficit to five points at 23-18. Five different players had a basket for Oneonta in the run.

Oneonta trailed by double digits for most of the third quarter before cutting it back to single digits late but entered the final quarter down 44-32 after another three-pointer by Bonin. Bonin led all scorers in the game with 15 points on five three-pointers.

Cortland pulled away early in the fourth quarter opening up a 20-point lead at the 5:26 mark on a three-pointer by Shannon McGuire.

Cortland outrebounded Oneonta 47-31 including a 16-7 advantage off the offensive glass. Oneonta held a 24-14 scoring edge in the paint.

Obermayer was the high scorer today for Oneonta with 10 points.

Oneonta will continue its road trip this weekend with back-to-back games at Brockport and SUNY Geneseo.
