Women's soccer captures Mayor's Cup title

Kornfeld and Kirkpatrick garner top individual honors

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team defeated Susquehanna University 4-2 today and, with the win, came its ninth Oneonta Mayor's Cup title and first since 2016.

The Inside Story
Oneonta (1-1-1) didn't waste any time in establishing its dominance posting a pair of goals in the opening 14 minutes of the match.

The first goal was a nice combo play between senior Abby Ousouljoglou (Bridgewater/Bridgewater Raritan Regional) and junior Micaela Honsinger (New Hartford/New Hartford).  Ousouljoglou carried the ball into the box before chipping a pass to her right where Honsinger got her head on the ball and sent it into the lower right corner of the goal for her first of the season.

The Red Dragons grabbed a two-goal advantage three minutes later when senior Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place) converted a penalty kick after being dragged down in the box.  Kornfeld's performance during the two-day event earned her the Offensive MVP.

Despite being outshot 9-7 in the first half, Oneonta took its 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Freshman Emma Kirkpatrick (Wading River/Shoreham Wading River) made it 3-0 in favor of the hosts scoring an unassisted goal in the 56th minute.  Kirkpatrick was well outside the box on the right flank and sent a ball towards the goal with a tough angle, but the shot flew over the head of the Susquehanna (2-2) keeper.  Kirkpatrick's goal was her second in as many days and earned her the Defensive MVP of the tournament.

The River Hawks got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute when Anna Werner converted a penalty kick.

Each team exchanged goals in the final two minutes including freshman Deanna Schlott's (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) first collegiate goal giving Oneonta a 4-1 lead.

Just the stats
Oneonta was outshot by the River Hawks 22-10 including 13-3 in the second half.  Oneonta keeper Celeste Trevellini (Queens/World Journalism Prep) did a tremendous job in her first start of the season in goal making 13 saves.

What's Next
Oneonta will next be in action next Saturday at home when they will host Vassar College for a non-conference match beginning at 2pm.
