The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team defeated Wells College 3-0 Friday evening with scores of 25-11, 25-23 and 25-22. The win lifts the Red Dragons record to 7-3 on the year.
The Inside Story
In the first set, Oneonta jumped out to a 7-0 lead with
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) at the service and never looked back. Leading 15-8 with
Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) at the service, Oneonta went on an 8-0 run with three of the kills coming from
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego). The Red Dragons earned a .355 hitting percentage in the first set.
The next two sets were much closer as Wells lead early on in both contests. Â In the second set, Wells jumped out to an early lead. Trailing 6-4, Oneonta used a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set. Later in the set, Wells would extend their lead to as much as four points. With Oneonta trailing 14-10, a
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) kill propelled Oneonta to six straight points to put the visitors in front 16-10. The Express refused to go down quietly as they were able to tie the set three more times. With score stalemated at 21-21,
Carly Lyndaker (Sandy Creek/Sandy Creek) gave the Red Dragons the lead for good with a kill from
Juliann Posch (Brookhaven/Bellport). A
Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) ace and a
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) kill capped off the set for Oneonta.
In the third set, Oneonta trailed 9-5 before going on a 5-0 run with a pair of service aces by
Katelyn McDonough (Guilderland/Guilderland), giving the Red Dragons their first lead of the set. The set went back and forth the rest of the way as the two teams were knotted up on nine different occasions. With the set tied at 21-21,
Ashlee Mazzella (Warwick/Warwick Valley) earned back-to-back kills to give the Red Dragons the lead for good. Mazzella capped off the set with a kill on a feed from
Kayla Rende (Wantagh/Wantagh).
Just the Stats
Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) paced Oneonta with a match-high 14 kills.
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) chipped in with eight kills and two blocks while
Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland) had seven.
Kayla Rende (Wantagh/Wantagh) and
Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) combined for 21 assists while
Lindsay Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) gathered 23 digs.
