Alfred, NY – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team are polled by the SUNYAC as a preseason favorite to return to the conference championship finals again. The roster slightly different than the one that got to the final last year got off to a rousing start taking down the Alfred University Saxons 9-0.
Doubles got off to a quick start with Oneonta taking all courts only losing two games in the three doubles matches contested. Junior
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and sophomore
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) rejoined as a tandem from last year winning 8-1 in the top spot. Rookie freshmen Maxi Karen making her Red Dragon debut teamed with sophomore Rebecca MacDonald and bageled their opponents 8-0. Finally in the third position sophomore
Amelia Wilson (Averill Park/Averill Park) matched up with freshman
Stephanie Menoutis (Warwick/Warwick Valley) making her first appearance as Red Dragon and had little trouble setting their Alfred opponents down to an 8-1 defeat.
Singles and Oneonta holding a 3-0 lead after the doubles stanza had little trouble completing the shutout with all six courts winning decisively. Sophomore
Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) playing in the top spot today turned in a 6-0, 6-4 win. Karen playing her second match on the day playing second single was an easy straight set winner at 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore
Giovanna Buccina (Syracuse/Westhill) got off to a slow start in the third flight in a tight first set she won 7-5 and then cruised to a 6-2 win in the second. Freshman Emily Green the third rookie in the lineup today for Oneonta was perfect in her double bagel triumph 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth position. Sophomore
Ariel Loucks (Averill Park/Averill Park) and junior
Gianna Papini (Helwett/George W. Hewlett) completed the shutout for the Red Dragons in the fifth and sixth position respectively playing authoritative tennis each winning in straight sets.
The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons head to SUNY Cortland on Saturday, August 31
st to compete in the Cortland Invitational Tournament against SUNY Cortland, SUNY New Paltz and Union College. The action gets underway beginning at 10:30 AM.
