A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team fell to Oswego 17-15 in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament Tuesday afternoon.
The Inside Story
Oswego(11-4) got on the board 1:46 into the game on Molly Beck's 35
th goal of the season. Oneonta (9-9) responded 7:29 into the half when
Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) fed
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) to tie the game at 1-1. The Red Dragons took the lead 18 seconds later on a
Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber) goal on a pass from
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central). After the Lakers tied it on a Toni Laneve goal, Oneonta took the lead back with tallies from
Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) and
Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber) to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 advantage. Oswego responded with three consecutive goals to go in front 5-4 with 8:50 remaining in the half.
Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber) knotted the game at 5-5 when she found the back of the net on a man-advantage.
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) then gave the Red Dragons the lead with her 39
th goal of the season with just over five minutes remaining in the half. Oswego closed out the first half with three straight goals to take an 8-6 lead at the break.
The Lakers kept the momentum going into the second half with the first two goals of the stanza to increase their lead to 10-6. The Red Dragons refused to go down easily as they tallied four goals in less than two minutes to tie the game at 10-10.
Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) started the run with her team-best 63
rd goal of the season.
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) cut the deficit two when she scored 14 seconds later on a feed from
Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber). After a
Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) goal pulled the Red Dragons within striking distance,
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) tallied a free position shot to knot the game at 10-10.
Unfortunately, the Lakers battled back with four unanswered goals of their own to take a 14-10 lead. The Red Dragons were able to cut the deficit down to two late, but the Lakers held possession of the ball in the final minutes of the game to advance in the SUNYAC Tournament.
Victoria Varone (Commack/Commack) and
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) paced the Oneonta offense with four goals apiece.
Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) and
Lily Avazis (Port Washington/Schreiber) each had a hat-trick while Avazis also added three assists in the loss.
Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) chipped in with a goal and three caused turnovers. Goalie
Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) closed out her career with six saves.
