Oneonta, NY – Senior day for the SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team ended with a resounding 7-2 triumph over visiting Baruch College. The win was crucial after a setback the day prior. The victory for the Red Dragons secured themselves a winning season for the first time in three-years as an independent.
Doubles saw wins for the second flight sophomores
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and
Ben Cohen (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin). They were dominant out of the gate with consistent serves and winning net play on route to their 8-3 win. Freshmen
Jack Clayton (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) and
Matthew Reinhold (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) lost the first game of the their match at the third seed and then never looked back going the distance to an 8-1 win clinching a 2-1 lead going into the singles stanza of the dual match.
Singles was a highlight for the graduating senior Nick Fox playing his last home match of his career in the second seeded position. Today Fox was more consistent and grinded out a 6-4, 6-4 straight set win with his teammates rooting him on and family in the stands which was a highlight for his career. A singles win for freshmen
Dalton Capobianco (Daniel Island, SC/SC Connections Charter School) who was almost perfect getting to his third flight positioned triumphing score of 6-0, 6-1. Smith playing in the fourth position also had little pushback from his opponent and cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory. The fifth seed saw junior
Alexander Reiley (Manorville/Eastport) fighting through a muscle soreness in his dominant arm pulled out a gutsy win with a 6-4, 6-4 tally. The sixth seeded player got his second start in a row as junior
Kiran Narsipur (Ossining/Ossining) was dominant from start to finish recording a 6-0, 6-1 score and second win in two days.
The Red Dragons are now 9-7 on the season and secured the 2018/19 year as a winning record. Coach Mitchel said "with three and sometimes four freshmen in the lineup this was a testament to the teams resolve to do well and succeed playing a very tough independent schedule, I and the team are very proud of the season the men put together."
The SUNY Oneonta men close out their 2018/19 campaign against The College of New Jersey at their campus in Ewing Township, NJ. The Red Dragons will certainly have their hands full as TCNJ is normally a nationally or regionally ranked squad. The action begins at 11 AM Saturday, April 27
th.
