Ewing Township, NJ – The Oneonta Red Dragons men's tennis team played a challenging match against The College of NJ Lions the 29
th ranked team in the country. Although the men were shutout there were several close matches that kept the Red Dragons within striking distance but ultimately were outclassed by TCNJ. The loss got the men's tennis team to a 9-8 record on the year and a winning season with four freshmen in the lineup and a winning record for the first time since 2016.
Noteworthy in doubles was an outstanding match at the number two position when sophomore
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and freshmen
Ben Cohen (Dresher, PA/Upper Dublin) came within one service break of defeating their TCNJ opponents. They were locked in a tight battle but were service broken in the fifth game and could never regain that elusive return break and settled for an 8-5 setback.
Down 3-0 going into the singles against an opponent of this caliber was too much to ask of the Red Dragons to come back, but again Oneonta left its mark with several long matches. A highlight of the afternoon was at the second position when senior
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) playing the final match of his career laid it all on the line against a great opponent. After losing the first set 6-4 with only one service break, Fox picked up his game with incredible return of serves and artistic net play and evened the match taking the second set 6-4. The third set was tight and Fox was on serve at 2-3 trying to tie the match but could not get closer. He settled for a 6-2 third set loss, but Fox left his heart on the court with an outstanding effort to close out a terrific career.
The Oneonta Red Dragons men's tennis team gets some needed rest over the summer. When they return to school in August they will be part of the newly formed men's tennis conference (NJAC) and prepare for a run to gain a conference championship. The Red Dragons have their next competition on Saturday, September 14
th in the Union College Invitational Tournament in Schenectady, NY.
