Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s tennis drops 6-3 decision to University of Scranton in tight match

Scranton, PA – In perhaps one of the more exciting matches of the year, the Red Dragons were down two starters and almost pulled off a win against the 10-6 University of Scranton men's tennis squad.

Doubles was a tight matchup which saw junior Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior Nick Fox in the first flight go down 4-0 and two service breaks but chipped their way back into the match by getting their two service breaks against back.  Once the Oneonta pair got the service breaks back they ran off the last four-games and took home a very impressive victory.  Unfortunately for Oneonta they lost at the doubles position two and three.  Noteworthy was at the third position freshmen Matthew Reinhold (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) and Jack Clayton (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) were in command of their match ahead a break of serve at 5-4 but Clayton suffered an injury and unfortunately limited his movement on the court and suffered a setback losing 8-5.  Clayton scheduled to start the singles competition had to sit out the next portion of the dual match.

The match when singles began saw the Red Dragons down only 2-1 and still very much alive in its quest to take a win back to Oneonta with a depleted lineup.  Ammirati at number one singles did win the first set but his University of Scranton opponent rebounded and won the next two sets.  The Red Dragons were down now 3-1.  Freshman Dalton Capobianco (Daniel Island, SC/SC Connections Charter School) was locked in a very long rallying match against a very stubborn opponent, but the Red Dragon positioned at number three eventually prevailed 7-5, 6-7 (7-4) and 10-7 keeping the Red Dragons alive.  Number six singles had junior Kiran Narsipur (Ossining/Ossining) get another start in a substitution role and was dominant earning a 6-1, 6-4 win earning the Red Dragons the third win on the day, but Oneonta could not get closer and suffered the 6-3 setback making the team 8-7 on the year.

On Thursday, April 25th The Red Dragon men will be back home with their second dual match in 24 hours and try to go to 9-7 on the year guaranteeing the Oneonta squad a winning season.  The match is slated for a 3 PM start at the Heissan Tennis Courts on the campus of Oneonta v Baruch College.  The women's tennis team will also be in action at the same time playing the distaff squad of Baruch as well.
