Flushing, NY – After dropping a competitive match yesterday in Oneonta against Hamilton College the Red Dragons headed to New York City to play a contest against the Hunter College Hawks. On the site of where such great champions as Roger Federer and Serena Williams won grand slam titles the Red Dragons displayed their tennis skills and rebounded to secure an 8-1 victory over CUNY Conference Hunter College. The victory today brings Oneonta to 8-6 on the year.
The doubles was competitive from the onset on the first flight when junior
Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior Nick Fox lost an early break of serve and bounced back to run off seven-straight games on route to an 8-2 win. On the second flight sophomores Benjamin Cohen and
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) went down a break of serve and then they also rebounded with consistent serves and dominant net play clinching an 8-3 win. Freshmen John Clayton and Matt Reinhold in the third position were also overpowering securing another 8-2 win helping Oneonta to a 3-0 lead after the doubles stanza.
Singles saw Fox play two tight sets but his serve and timely net play was too much for the Hunter opponent to handle as he headed to a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Freshman
Dalton Capobianco (Daniel Island, SC/SC Connections Charter School) was almost perfect dominating his opponent 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. Smith got the double bagel victory at the fourth position cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win. At the fifth singles position junior
Alexander Reiley (Manorville/Eastport) continues his successful season taking out his opponent 6-0, 6-2. Junior
Kiran Narsipur (Ossining/Ossining) got the start today in the sixth position and was also almost perfect triumphing to an easy 6-0, 6-1 decision.
The Red Dragons are back home at the Heissan Tennis Courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, April 20
th with a doubleheader starting at 10 AM against SUNY Farmingdale and the night cap against SUNY Oswego beginning at 4 PM.
