Game Recap: Softball |

Bluethgen throws a no-no; Del Genio sets career runs mark; Softball sweeps Potsdam

A Quick Look
Junior Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack) tossed the seventh no-hitter in program history, the first since 2009, in game 1 of a doubleheader sweep for SUNY Oneonta today versus Potsdam.  The Red Dragons have now won five of its last six games, as they work themselves into a playoff position with six games remaining in the SUNYAC schedule.

The Inside Story
Oneonta (12-15-1, 7-5 SUNYAC) scored all the runs they would need in the first inning of game 1.  Senior Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) led off the inning with a double to left center field and went to third on a failed pick-off attempt.  Classmate Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) then beat out a bunt before going to an uncovered second base when the second baseman mis handled the throw at first base.  Del Genio scored on a ground out by senior Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) and Ruiz scored on a sharp single off the bat of freshman Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford).

Oneonta scored a single run in the fourth before putting the game out of reach in the sixth with four more runs.  The big hit in the inning came from sophomore Amanda Sexton (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) who hit a three-run home run, which knocked in freshmen Darian Wood (Mount Marion/Saugerties) and Madison Capozucca (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls) in front of her.  Wood singled to drive in junior Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) with the first run of the inning.

Bluethgen faced three batters over the minimum and recorded a season high nine strikeouts.  The closest Potsdam came to recording a hit was in the fifth inning, but sophomore Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) made a diving stop and threw the runner out from her knees.

Potsdam plated single runs in the first and second innings to take an early lead.  The Oneonta bats woke up in the bottom of the third scoring six runs to gain the lead for good.

The first four runs of the third came from a Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) bomb that sailed way over the left field fence driving in Sexton, Del Genio and Ruiz who all got on to load the bases with no outs.  The run for Del Genio was her 120th of her career, which eclipsed the all-time mark of 119 set by Oneonta Hall of Famer Beth Oppenheimer in 2003.

The final two runs of the inning came with two outs, as Capozucca hit another no-doubter over the left field fence that knocked in Corbett.

Oneonta's final two runs came in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Koch and in the sixth when Palmatier hit a two-out RBI double.

Junior Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist) had her longest outing since Mar. 6 allowing five hits and one earned run to earn her second victory of the season.

Just the Stats
Del Genio, Sabatino, Corbett and Wood all had two hits in game 1.  Sexton drove in four runs in the first game.  Ruiz was a perfect 4-for-4 in game 2 scoring three times.  Sabatino collected two more hits in the night cap.

What's Next
Oneonta will be right back at it tomorrow morning versus Plattsburgh for another SUNYAC doubleheader beginning at 11am at SUNY Cobleskill.
