Game 2 called in 4th inning

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team was involved in a slugfest coming up short, 14-13, in the first game of a doubleheader at Hamilton today.  Game 2 was called in the middle of the fourth with Hamilton leading 3-1.
 
The Inside Story
Oneonta (7-14-1) rallied from behind in the final two innings before falling in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Red Dragons scored 11 runs in the including eight runs in the sixth inning to grab a 13-12 lead heading to Hamilton's last at-bat.
 
Oneonta took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.  Senior Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) smacked her third home run of the season for the first run and classmate Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) scored the second run on a passed ball.
 
The Continentals seized control of the contest scoring nine runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings.  Hamilton started with five runs in the bottom of the third inning capped by a two-run single from Jodi Weiss.
 
RBI singles by Ashleah Yzaguirre, Emily Fraser and Liz Brautigam accounted for the three runs in the fourth while Fraser drove in the lone run for the Continentals in the fifth.
 
Oneonta's bats came alive in the sixth exploding for eight runs to grab a 10-9 lead.  Freshman Darian Wood (Mount Marion/Saugerties), Del Genio and Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) each drove in a pair of runs in the inning.
 
Hamilton came right back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead scoring three runs.  The big hit came off the bat of Shelby McVey who drove in a pair of runs with a double to left field.
 
Wood was in the middle of Oneonta's seventh inning coming through with a two-run single that tied the score.  She then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
 
Hamilton countered one final time in its final at-bat ending the game on an RBI double by Brautigam.
 
Just the Stats
Del Genio and Wood led the Oneonta offense with two hits each while combining to drive in seven runs.  The Red Dragons collected six extra-base hits including five doubles.
 
What's Next
Oneonta is scheduled to play New Paltz at home on Saturday, but the doubleheader may be moved due to field conditions.  Please check www.oneontaathletics.com for more updates.
