A Quick Look
Freshman
Madison Capozucca (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls) hit a three-run home run to help lift the SUNY Oneonta softball team to a 6-4 win last night in game 1 of a doubleheader split with Hendrix College. The Red Dragons dropped the second game 4-1 and currently sit at 3-5 with a pair of games remaining on its Texas road trip.
Â
The Inside Story
The Red Dragons scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to grab an early lead. Senior
Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) walked to lead off the inning and then stole second. With two outs, classmate
Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) roped a double to left field to drive in Del Genio. Sabatino came around to score on a single by
Amanda Sexton (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) when the relay to the plate went by the catcher.
Â
Hendrix tied the score in the bottom of the inning and went ahead 4-2 with two more runs in the fourth.
Â
Capozucca's heroics came in the top of the sixth inning with two outs.Â
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) was hit by a pitch and
Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) singled to left field to put two runners on for Oneonta. Capozucca then delivered a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to give the Red Dragons a 5-4 lead.
Â
Oneonta tacked on another run in the seventh when Sexton hit an RBI single through the left side to knock in
Kristen Collins (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) who led off the inning with a single.
Â
Junior pitcher
Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack) weathered the storm to pick up the complete game victory. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five to record her second win of the trip.
Â
In the night cap, Oneonta could only muster four hits including a pair by Del Genio. The Red Dragons scored its lone run in the sixth when freshman
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) earned a walk with the bases loaded to score Collins.
Â
Just the Stats
Capozucca's three-run homer was the second of the season. She now leads the team with seven runs batted in through eight games.
Â
Del Genio is the team leader with 12 hits and 18 total bases thus far while also being tied with Collins for the team lead in runs scored with five.
