A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team earned a split in its doubleheader today against SUNY Geneseo winning game 1, 4-2, and dropping game 2, 14-3 in five innings. The split put the Red Dragons at 6-9-1 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC while Geneseo goes to 12-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The Inside Story
Geneseo jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Hannah Elmer singled to center field to lead off the inning and scored when Ashlyn Kersch followed with a double to right center field. Kersch went to third on a ground out and came into score on a passed ball.

The Red Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior
Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) led off the inning with a double to left center. Geneseo then retired the next two hitters before freshman
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) walked to put two runners on for junior
Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central). Corbett brought Del Genio and Palmatier home with a double to center field.

Oneonta's winning runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth inning coming once again with two outs. Senior
Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) started the inning with a single, which was followed with another single by sophomore
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South). Ruiz then advanced to third on a throwing after a lineout. Koch then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for freshman
Olivia Murray (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa). Murray came through with a single to center field driving in both Ruiz and Koch.

Junior
Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack) induced a big double play after walking the lead off batter and then got Alyssa Persich to ground out to second base to end the game. Bluethgen went the distance to record her third win of the season.

In game 2, the Knights scored six runs in the first and seven more in the second to take command in its five-inning victory. Abbey Whitney was the offensive star for the Knights going 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and six runs batted in.

The highlight of the second game for the Red Dragons was a solo shot by Del Genio that cleared the left field fence.

Just the Stats
Del Genio collected three hits today including two for extra bases. Koch had a double and a run batted in in game 2. Ruiz recorded an RBI in game 2.

Bluethgen allowed only five hits and struck out three in her game 1 victory.

What's next
Oneonta ravels back to the Capital District on Tuesday to face nationally ranked Rensselaer for a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.
