The SUNY Oneonta baseball team was swept in their SUNYAC doubleheader against Cortland Friday afternoon by scores of 7-0 and 7-2.
The Inside Story
Game 1.
Oneonta (9-11, 2-7 SUNYAC) received five shutout innings from starting pitcher
Steven Gerringer (LaGrangeville/Arlington) before Cortland taxed the bullpen for seven runs in the sixth. Gerringer allowed just three hits while striking out four and walking two.
David Deberardinis (Fishkill/John Jay) and
Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties) collected the lone Oneonta hits in the game.
Game 2
Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
John Zinko (Wallkill/Wallkill) led off the inning with a home run to left for his third of the season. With runners on second and third,
Mike Graves (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring
Jonathan Lezette (Saugerties/Saugerties).
Cortland (14-8-1, 6-0 SUNYAC) would tie the game in the bottom of the inning on some Oneonta fielding miscues and a Garrett Hunter RBI single. In the top of the fifth, Cortland took the lead for good on a Colin BeVard RBI double to right. Cortland put the game out of reach with three runs in bottom of the seventh to take a 6-2 advantage. Â
David Deberardinis (Fishkill/John Jay) collected two of Oneonta's six hits in the game.
Robert Ottaviano (Nanuet/Albertus Magnus) suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three in six innings of work.
