A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team traveled to No. 10 Ithaca College today and came away with a tie in game two of the twin bill after falling 4-3 in game one.
Â
The Inside Story
Oneonta (5-8-1) matched the Bombers pitch for pitch in both games today. Game 1 ended on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by Ithaca's Vanessa Brown. Brown's game-ender came with two outs.
Â
The Red Dragons started the scoring in the first inning when senior
Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South). Del Genio led off the game with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by senior
Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke).
Â
Oneonta grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning when sophomore
Amanda Sexton (Port Jervis/Port Jervis) hit a two-out double to drive in junior
Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) who singled.
Â
Ithaca came back in the bottom of the third scoring three runs to take the lead. Annie Cooney hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. The other two runs for the Bombers came in on an errand throw on a double steal.
Â
The Red Dragons tied the game in the fifth, once again striking with two outs. This time it was Corbett who had a sacrifice fly to knock in Ruiz who singled, went to second on a ground out and then stole third.
Â
In the second game, Ithaca scored single runs in the second in the fourth innings to lead at the midway point.
Â
Del Genio drove in the tying runs in the fifth inning for Oneonta. Both
Olivia Murray (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) came in to score on the hit.
Â
Koch gave the Red Dragons the lead in the sixth when she drove a ball over the fence in left-center.
Â
Ithaca would knot the score at three apiece in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Neither team broke the tie in the seventh inning and the game was ended due to darkness.
Â
