Women's basketball holds off Plattsburgh

Junior Olivia Allrich leads Oneonta with 20 points

A hot-shooting final quarter of play carried the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team to a 69-63 win tonight against Plattsburgh.  The two squads entered the fourth period deadlocked at 46 apiece before Oneonta (19-5, 13-4 SUNYAC) seized control enroute to a 23-point effort in the final 10 minutes.
 
Leading the way for the Red Dragons was junior Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) who scored a collegiate best 20 points.  Allrich led the charge in the final quarter scoring nine points including a big three to break a 51 all tie and give Oneonta the lead for good.  Allrich finished the contest making 8-of-13 from the floor including four from behind the arc.
 
Plattsburgh continued to battle and (10-14, 7-10 SUNYAC) and closed its deficit back to three points after Ly'rell Walker made 1-of-2 free throws with just over two minutes to play.  Oneonta converted 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
 
The two teams combined to score 44 points in the third quarter with a slight edge going to Plattsburgh who scored 23.  Oneonta pushed its lead to 36-29 early in the period before the Cardinals stormed back with nine unanswered capped by a trey from Taylor Durnin.  Durnin led all scorers in the game with 25 points.
 
Three players joined Allrich in double figures tonight including classmate Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) (16 points), senior Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and sophomore Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) who each contributed 10 points.  Amalbert made 10-of-12 free throws while Culeton collected nine boards.  Senior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) led everyone in the contest with 14 rebounds.
 
Neither team shot particularly well in the opening period of tonight's game.  Plattsburgh scored the first seven points, as the Red Dragons struggled out of the gate.  Oneonta did rebound and closed out the final four minutes outscoring the Cardinals 7-1 to trail by a points at the end of the stanza.
 
Plattsburgh scored the first four points of the second quarter before Oneonta countered with 11 unanswered to grab an 18-12 lead.  The run was capped by a layup by Frank.  A Jumper by Kayla Doody knotted the score at 18 apiece at the 3:12 mark.
 
Oneonta will conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon against Potsdam beginning at 2pm.  The Red Dragons have already clinched a playoff spot, it's just a matter of whether they will be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed.
