Strong second half propels women's basketball past Potsdam

Red Dragons finish regular season 20-5

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team posted back-to-back 20-point quarters in the second half to erase a 31-26 halftime deficit enroute to a 66-57 victory today to conclude the regular season against Potsdam.  The win for the Red Dragons raised its overall record to 20-5 overall while completing a 14-4 record in the SUNYAC.  The 20 wins for the regular season is the first time Oneonta has reached that mark since 2001 when they were 24-1 at the end of the regular season.  It is also the first time during Head Coach Daphne Thompson's tenure that the squad has won 20 games in the regular season.

With a victory today for Geneseo against Oswego, Oneonta has earned the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament which begins this coming Tuesday.  The Red Dragons will play host to the No. 6 seed Fredonia Blue Devils.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm.

Over the final two quarters, Oneonta shot 50 percent led by senior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) and Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) who dominated inside.  Hayes made 5-of-6 shots during the final two quarters and scored 11 points while Frank made 4-of-5 shots to score nine points.  Frank also collected seven rebounds to give her nine boards for the game.  Hayes also finished the contest with nine rebounds.

After a layup by Devyn Elliott to open the third quarter for Potsdam, Oneonta took command of the game with a 12-0 run capped with a layup from Hayes.  Hayes scored seven of her 11 second half points during the outburst.

Potsdam continued to battle trailing by four points at the end of the third quarter 46-42.  The Bears scored the final seven points of the quarter to close the gap.  Sophomore Naya Walters recorded a couple of baskets during the stretch.

Potsdam kept close at the start of the final quarter but, by midway through, Oneonta began pushing its lead at a steady rate building it to as many as 11 points with just under two minutes remaining.

The first half was a complete opposite for both squads with the Bears shooting over 50 percent, as they built themselves a halftime lead.  A 12-0 run late in the first quarter gave Potsdam a 17-9 lead heading to the second quarter.  Walters and Dyamon Hunter combined for nine points during the spurt.

The Bears maintained its lead throughout the second quarter building it to 10 points on a bucket by Hunter.  Oneonta made a run and the cut its deficit back to four points late.
