A strong third quarter lifted the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team to a 67-59 road win against Oswego today. The game, which was moved to this afternoon after weather postponed it a day, was the final regular season road game for the Red Dragons. Oneonta (18-5, 12-4 SUNYAC) have put together an 11-1 mark this season away from home.
Â
Oneonta trailed at halftime by two points 30-28 before turning the score in their favor in the third quarter outscoring Oswego (2-21, 1-15 SUNYAC) 19-10 to grab a 47-40 advantage heading to the final quarter. Junior
Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) put an exclamation point on the quarter with a three-pointer with just over one minute to go in the quarter. Allrich's trey capped seven unanswered to end the stanza.
Â
In the quarter, junior
Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) led the charge with six of her 13 points. An old fashioned three-point play by Hayes broke a knotted 33 all tie at the 7:28 mark. Hayes added her sixth point of the quarter at the 3:59 mark to put Oneonta ahead 40-37.
Â
A 9-2 burst by the Red Dragons in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter blew the game wide open giving Oneonta a 14-point cushion at 56-42. Senior
Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy) led the way with six points while junior
Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) added a three-pointer.
Â
After a brief counter by the Lakers, another trey from Amalbert pushed Oneonta's lead back to double digits with less than five minutes to go. Oswego cut its deficit back to single digits but never got any closer than six points the rest of the way.
Â
Amalbert was the high scorer in the game tallying 23 points making 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Sophomore
Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) came off the bench to score eight points while grabbing a team high nine boards.
Â
The Lakers had three players in double figures led by Ramatoulaye Sy who scored 15 points.
Â
Oneonta will finish the regular season at home with games against Plattsburgh on Friday night and versus Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta is still vying for the No. 2 seed for the SUNYAC tournament. They are one game behind Geneseo with the tie-breaker should the two teams finished tied for second place.
