Tortorice scores pair to lead women's soccer into playoffs

Red Dragons clinch playoff spot with win at Plattsburgh

A Quick Look
In a must win for the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team, freshman Joie Tortorice (Melville/Walt Whitman) notched a pair of goals to lead the Red Dragons to a 3-2 win at Plattsburgh to complete the regular season in the SUNYAC.  The win coupled with a Fredonia loss to Cortland in overtime gives Oneonta (6-8-3, 4-5 SUNYAC) a spot in the conference tournament.  Oneonta will be the sixth seed and they will travel to Brockport next Saturday for a first round game.
 
The Inside Story
The match started with some fireworks with both teams scoring its first goals in the opening seven minutes.  Plattsburgh (8-7-1, 4-4-1 SUNYAC) scored first when Allison Seidman tallied an unassisted goal in the fifth minute.  Tortorice scored her first of the game two minutes later off an assist from classmate Hannah Kelly (Monroe/Monroe Woodbury).
 
Senior Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place) gave Oneonta the lead in the 27th minute when she finished off a pass from sophomore Sienna Nicolich (Glen Cove/Glen Cove).
 
The Red Dragons were outshot, 10-7, in the first half but took its one-goal advantage into the break.
 
In the 66th minute Abigail Seamans tied the game at two goals apiece with an assist from Kirsten Villemaire.
 
The score was tied very long, as Tortorice gave Oneonta the lead back in the 70th minute off an assist from Kornfeld.
 
Just the Stats
Plattsburgh finished the match with a 19-13 shot advantage while gaining four corner kicks to two for Oneonta.  Sophomore keeper Claire Lepper (Poland/Poland) made eight stops in picking up the win for the Red Dragons.
 
What's Next
Oneonta will finish out the regular season on Tuesday afternoon when they host Wilkes University at 3pm.
