Juniors
Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) and
Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) posted double digits to lead the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team to a 56-46 victory at Fredonia today. The win for the Red Dragons was its fourth straight and raises its overall record to 14-2 while keeping pace at the top of the SUNYAC standings with its 8-1 record.

The Red Dragons shot 55 percent in the final period including making 3-of-6 from behind the arc to secure its win. Oneonta finished the game with seven three pointers, six of them coming after halftime.

The Red Dragons entered the fourth period with a 39-35 lead and, midway through the period, increased its lead to 10 points for the first time after a basket by senior
Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy). Anken would finish the game with a collegiate best nine assists while contributing nine points.

Both teams struggled in the opening period combining for 13 points. The Blue Devils grabbed the early advantage 8-5 after junior
Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) made a jumper to pull Oneonta to within three points with just over one minute to go.

In the second period, Oneonta shot and even 50 percent and outscored Fredonia (7-8, 4-4 SUNYAC) 19-14 to take a slim 24-22 lead into halftime. Corso led the way with six points in the period. The Red Dragons came all the way back to tie the score at 15 apiece before a three-pointer by Amalbert gave them the lead. The two teams then went back-and-forth with the lead until four unanswered points gave Oneonta a 24-20 lead with 59 seconds remaining in the period.

Neither team seized any momentum in the third period with Oneonta increasing its lead by two points entering the fourth period. The Red Dragons scored 15 points in the period aided by three, three-pointers. Corso made two and sophomore
Maya Bernsley (Monroe/Monroe Woodbury) made the other.

Oneonta outrebounded Fredonia (7-8, 4-4 SUNYAC) 41-31 led by Hayes' collegiate high 12, which included seven on the offensive end.

Oneonta will have a week to prepare for its next game next Saturday at home against New Paltz. The two squads are currently tied for first place in the conference with their 8-1 records. The Red Dragons handed the Hawks its only conference loss back in December.
