Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball falls at home to New Paltz

The senior duo of Lindsay Bettke and Rachel Simon combined to score 52 points today in leading the visiting New Paltz Hawks to a 73-55 victory against host SUNY Oneonta in women's action.  In a contest between two of the top three teams in the SUNYAC it was the Hawks' hot shooting from long range that proved to be too much to overcome.

The victory for the visitors raised its overall record to 13-4 and 9-1 in the conference while Oneonta fell to 14-3 overall and 8-2 in the SUNYAC.

The junior tandem of Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) and Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) led Oneonta today with 18 and 10 points respectively.  Corso shot 8-of-16 from the floor and added a game high 10 rebounds.

After building itself a 38-25 halftime lead, back-to-back threes by Bettke and Simon to start the third quarter got the Hawks off and running.  New Paltz made five shots from behind the arc in the quarter to expand its lead to 22 points entering the final period.

An 6-0 spurt by the Red Dragons early in the final quarter cut its deficit to 18 points, as it looked like they would make a run.  A three by junior Paige Niemeyer settled the Hawks, as they continued to use valuable clock the rest of the way in securing the win.

Bettke put an exclamation point on the opening half with a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded.  Bettke made four from behind the arc in the first half enroute to posting 16 points.

The Hawks made 10-of-17 shots in the opening quarter to carry a 22-10 lead into the second quarter of play.  New Paltz made five of its first six shots to jump out to an 11-4 lead.

Next up for Oneonta is a match up with its rival Cortland this coming Tuesday night on the road beginning at
