Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Scott Cebollero strikes twice; Men's soccer defeats No. 15 Stevens

For a second straight game, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team locked horns with an annual NCAA participant.  Today, it was No. 15 Stevens Institute that they battled in the heat and humidity coming away with a come-from-behind 2-1 win at home.

"That's the second time we have come from behind against an organized and dangerous Stevens team," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "There were some outstanding performances today, and none more than Scott Cebollero (Commack/Commack) who scored both our goals a day after his birthday."

Cebollero netted the game-winner just 57 seconds into the second overtime off a corner kick.  Senior Nicholas Plate (Miller Place/Sachem North) served the ball into the box where Scott's brother, Justin, got his head on the ball and sent it towards the goal.  Scott, who was crossing in front of the goal, then got his head on the ball and redirected it just inside the left post.

Cebollero tied the game for Oneonta in the 72nd minute when he redirected a crossing pass from the left side of the box by senior Austin Hughes (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who notched his second assists of the season.  Hughes moved around a Stevens defender before sending the ball across to the right side where a charging Cebollero one-timed the pass into the back of the goal.

Oneonta dominated the game statistically even though they were trailing 1-0 early in the match.  Stevens' Cristiano Hocken gave the Ducks the early lead scoring in the third minute of play.  Hocken raced to get to a ball sent towards the box by Daniel Aversano before chipping the ball by a charging Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack) finishing off the play with a header across the line.

Giordano recorded three saves in the match and kept the score at one goal making a couple of diving stops.  His counterpart, Aaron Henry, also made a couple of saves from shots at close range.

The Red Dragons outshot the Ducks 17-7 in the contest and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Oneonta will host the annual Mayor's Cup tournament this weekend starting on Friday afternoon.  Plattsburgh will play U Mass Boston at 1pm before Oneonta takes on St. Lawrence at 4pm.  Admission is free to all games.
