Women's lacrosse cruises past Potsdam

Senior Taylor Casey eclipses 200 career goals

The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team journeyed north to Potsdam today and came away with a lopsided 21-11 victory.  The win for the Red Dragons secured a spot in the upcoming SUNYAC tournament that begins with first round games next Tuesday.  Oneonta is now 8-6-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play with one game remaining in the regular season at Fredonia on Saturday.

Oneonta trailed 3-1 after Potsdam (4-11, 1-6 SUNYAC) scored back-to-back to break a 1-1 tie.  The Red Dragons seized control of the contest running off five unanswered to grab a 6-3 lead and never looked back.  Freshman Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) scored all three of her goals during the run.  The rookie now has 35 goals on the season.

Another five straight goals, including three from senior Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial), ran the Red Dragons' lead to 11-4 late in the first half.  Casey would finish the game with five goals to add to her team leading total of 51 goals.  She also became only the third player in the history of the program to eclipse 200 career goals.  Oneonta carried a 12-6 lead into halftime.

Oneonta put together one more run of five consecutive goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to put the game completely out of reach.  Five different players scored for the Red Dragons including an extra player goal by junior Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) who finished the contest with a pair of goals.

Sophomores Shannon Giddens (Franklin Square/H Frank Carey) and Erin Fowler (East Meadow/East Meadow) joined Calabrese with three goals each in the game.  Calabrese added a pair of assists while Fowler collected six draw controls.

Junior Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) made seven stops in goal to pick up her third win of the season.
