Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late comeback falls short for men's basketball at Geneseo

Kevin Mackin scores 22 points in loss

Sophomore Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) scored a team high 22 points, but the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team came up short to SUNY Geneseo 73-68.  The loss for the Red Dragons was its sixth straight as they continue to battle for the final playoff spot in the SUNYAC with two games remaining in the regular season.  Oneonta controls its own destiny facing Potsdam next weekend with a chance to clinch with a win against the Bears.  The Red Dragons will enter the final weekend 11-12 overall and 7-9 in conference play.

A three by Mackin gave Oneonta an early 6-2 lead two minutes into the contest.  The two teams took turns with the lead throughout most of the opening half until a lay up by Terrance Nichols gave Geneseo (14-9, 11-5 SUNYAC) the lead for good.  Nichols' bucket was the beginning of eight unanswered the lifted the Knights to a 39-31 halftime lead.

Oneonta fell behind by as many as 18 points midway through the second half, before putting together a 10-0 run to pull within 59-51 with 7:06 remaining.  A lay up by junior Matthew Boyd (Hempstead/Half Hollow Hills East) capped the run.

Geneseo built its lead back to 15 points with 34 seconds to go in the contest.  A valiant comeback effort by Oneonta ran out of time as they scored the final 10 points of the game.  Mackin sparked the burst with five points including one of his six, three-pointers on the day.

The Red Dragons did hold advantages in second chance points (13-6), bench points (23-14), fast break points (13-4) and rebounding (41-31).  Deegan led the reserves with eight points while Bull grabbed a game high 11 boards.

The men will finish the regular season in the North Country next weekend with games at Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
