ORANGE, Calif. – The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team resumed play today at Chapman University in the first of two games in California. The Red Dragons dominated in the paint en route to an 82-69 victory that snapped a mini four-game skid.
Oneonta (4-4) had four players score in double figures in the contest led by junior
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) who made five, three-pointers in totaling 17 points. Classmate
Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) made 7-of-11 shots in posting 14 points. Junior
Ian Schultz (Clifton Park, NY/CBA) scored 11 points and freshman
Dylan Trombley (Moriah, NY/Moriah) added 10 points off the bench reaching double digits for the first time of his collegiate career.
"Our guys were eager to play tonight," said Head Coach
Cameron Conover. "It was our first game in 11 days and we came out with great intensity."
Trombley led a group of reserves that outscored Chapman's bench 25-11. Senior AC Kirkwood sparked the Red Dragons on the glass grabbing a season high nine boards including four on the offensive end.
Conover continued, "I thought we rebounded the ball better tonight and several guys made big plays. AC gave us some really good minutes and set the tone for us with his offensive and defensive rebounding."
Oneonta jumped on Chapman (4-5) from the opening tip running out to an early 11-2 lead. The Red Dragons never looked back and led by as many as 17 points in the second half. The lead reached as much as 14 points in the first half but Chapman cut the lead back into single digits on a layup from junior Cam Haslam just before halftime.
With a bit of momentum going into the break, senior Reed Nakakihara led a furious run to start the second half for the Panthers, as they closed the gap to just a bucket with still 16 minutes left in the game.
Mackin responded for the Red Dragons with one of his five three-pointers to spark a 6-0 run that pushed the lead back to a comfortable margin. The Panthers never came closer than six points the rest of the way and Oneonta ran the lead up to as many as 17 points.
Haslam's 15 points and six assists led the Panthers but Nakakihara scored all 14 of his points in the second half. Sophomore Chandler White scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds while junior Colin Ferrier contributed 13 points as well.

Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) was a point shy of a double-double with 11 rebounds. The Red Dragons scored 42 of their points in the paint and turned 14 offensive rebounds into 10 second chance points. The Panthers were out-rebounded 42-28.
The Red Dragons conclude its mini trip to the West coast with a game at the University of La Verne Thursday afternoon.
