Women's basketball drops city battle to Hartwick

The visiting Hartwick Hawks defeated host SUNY Oneonta tonight in the battle of city rivals 67-54.  Harwtick (5-1) built itself a 58-34 lead entering the fourth quarter and then held off a late surge by Oneonta (4-1) over the final 10 minutes to secure the victory.

Senior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) and junior Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) paced the Red Dragons with 14 and 12 points respectively.  Corso also added a game high 12 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.

The Hawks had three players in double figures led by senior Carly Johnson who scored a game high 16 points.  Classmate Mary Schoenherr added 14 points and sophomore Kelly Pine contributed 10 points off the bench.

The closest quarter of action was the opening one with Hartwick ultimately grabbing a 19-13 lead.  Oneonta led early 7-2 after a three-pointer by junior Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) and a layup by Frank.

The Hawks climbed back into the game and with just over four minutes to go in the quarter, they grabbed a 10-9 lead after Johnson converted a pair of free throws.  A three-pointer by Molly Kirby and a jumper by Johnson expanded the Hartwick advantage to 15-9.

In the middle two quarters, Hartwick put together 18 points and 21 points to push its advantage to 24 points after the third quarter.

Oneonta will travel to the north country this weekend to open its SUNYAC schedule at Potsdam and Plattsburgh.
