Men's basketball stays perfect with tournament title at Susquehanna

Mackin named MVP; Rivera named All-Tournament

Junior Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) scored a game high 22 points to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to an 84-61 victory against host Susquehanna to capture the Trailways Tip-off tournament title while remaining perfect in the early season at 3-0.  Mackin's performance today combined with his effort last night earned him the Most Valuable Player nod.  Sophomore Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton), who scored 26 points last night, was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 19 points in today's contest.

As they have in each of the first few games of the season, the Red Dragons got off to a strong start in the opening half shooting 52 percent including 8-of-14 from behind the arc.  Oneonta's shooting allowed them to build a 47-34 lead heading into halftime.

"I am proud of the way our team came out tonight," said Coach Cameron Conover.  "We had great focus and really set the tone from the opening jump.  It was a true team effort.  Our bench was invested in the game and had great energy."

Oneonta scored the opening seven points of the game, as they led from wire-to-wire.  A 14-0 outburst pushed Oneonta's first half lead to 28-9.  Rivera fueled the run with seven points after entering the game at the 13:28 mark.

The Red Dragons maintained its consistent play in the second half never allowing Susquehanna to cut into the lead while increasing it incrementally throughout the half to its final of 23 points.

Joining Mackin and Rivera in double figures today was junior Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) who contributed 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting.

In the game, Oneonta controlled the backboards including 17 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second chance points.  The Red Dragons also forced 13 turnovers that led to 14 points while recording 40 of its points in the paint.

Conover concluded, "Even though we played well, we still can learn a great deal from this game and I know our guys are eager to get better."
