Oneonta, NY , - The women's swimming and diving team took on their city rivals the Hartwick Hawks on the campus of Hartwick College this afternoon and were setback 152-136. The loss was the first defeat for the Red Dragon women on the season.
There were several highlights for Oneonta which happened in the seventh event during the 100 yard backstroke when freshman
Nicolette Vanella (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) checked in with a time of 1:04.34 with her teammate freshman
Erin Clune (Kerhonkson/Rodout Valley) coming in at the runner-up spot less than a second behind Vanella. The 100 yard breaststroke had a Red Dragon winner when junior
Kelly Carey (Suffern/Suffern) timed in at 1:08.50. Senior
Julia Llewellyn (East Islip/East Islip High School) was victorious in the 200 yard butterfly touching the wall at 2:14.48 only .41 seconds ahead of the Hartwick runner-up.Â
Later on the Red Dragons took home another win this time in the 200 yard breaststroke as junior
Kelly Carey (Suffern/Suffern) was victorious with a time of 2:31.08 more than three-seconds ahead of her Hartwick foe/runner-up. Another nice highlight for the women occurred in the 100 yard butterfly when Llewellyn and junior
Nicole Lapinski (Pine Push/Pine Bush) took the top two positions with times of 1:01.63 and 1:02.17 respectfully. Llewellyn picked up another win also in the 200 yard individual medley scoring the victory with a time of 2:18.63 less than a second ahead of the Hartwick runner-up. The victory in the 200 yard individual medley was the third on the day for Llewellyn.
The diving competition saw an Oneonta contestant take the top spot when sophomore
Samantha Giler (Chester/Monroe-Woodbury) took the win scoring a 155.74 tally in the one-meter dive.
The Red Dragon women now get ready for the annual Franklin and Marshall invitational which takes place beginning on Friday, November 16th in Lancaster, PA on the campus of Franklin and Marshall beginning at 4 PM.
