Binghamton, NY – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis ended its regular season with a big win over the seven-time defending champions of the SUNYAC Geneseo Knights in dramatic fashion overwhelming them 7-2. This was the second time in 13 months that Oneonta toppled the champions. The win for Oneonta puts them as the number two seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Championship Playoffs. SUNY Geneseo has to settle for a playoff berth in the number three seeded position.
The doubles started off incredibly positive for Oneonta. Sophomore
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) and senior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) were never threatened and continue to play poised and confident tennis asserting themselves at the net. Sophomore
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) and freshman Oliva Fraser had some trouble getting out of the starting gate. They were down 4-1 and rallied back with smart strategy and closing out the match 8-6 in their favor.
Singles began with a 2-1 advantage. From this point the Red Dragons won five of the six singles matches contested. Eulau began the run tallying an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over the Geneseo number one combatant. Brault was equally impressive and was in command at the second flight from start to finish also only dropping two games on route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Lipscomb was locked in a battle of very long rallies at third singles, but Lipscomb ran down all the balls and was better on the big points recording a 7-5 opening set win. She followed that up with dominant second set never in any real trouble and closed out the match 6-1 in the finale. What's interesting about Lipscomb is that she now has not been setback at all this fall in singles match play and in her rookie year in 2017. A very entertaining match occurred in the fourth spot. Fraser continues to dazzle in her rookie year taking down a senior from Geneseo. Fraser used consistent play and patience while outlasting her Knights opponent 6-2, 6-4. Fraser walked off the court as the clincher for the Red Dragons assuring Oneonta the second seed in upcoming championships. Locked in a battle at the sixth position was freshman
Madeline Carswell (Albany/Bethlehem) who lost the first set 6-2. She never waivered and her competitive spirit got her the second set victory 6-3. A third set was needed to determine the outcome and the pair went back and forth. Carswell actually went ahead 5-3 but lost the next three games now in danger of losing the match. Serving at 5-6 she saved three-match points and got herself into the tiebreaker. Carswell went down 3-0 in the tiebreaker but came back to get the breaker knotted up at 5-5. Carswell rattled off the next two points and the match in what proved to be an emotional win for her and the squad as they all congratulated her in celebratory style at the conclusion insuring the 7-2 team victory.
The Red Dragons now begin the playoffs and again will meet the same SUNY Geneseo Knights in the semifinals. That match will be played at the Binghamton Tennis Center, Binghamton, NY on Saturday, October 13
th beginning at 4 PM.
