Volleyball Blanks Hartwick In Dig Pink Opener

The Oneonta volleyball team defeated crosstown rival Hartwick College 3-0 in non-conference action Friday evening at Dewar Arena. The will lifts the Red Dragons record to 12-17 on the year while the Hawks slide to 10-11.

The Red Dragons won by scores of 25-17, 30-28, and 25-21. In the first set, Oneonta opened up a big lead jumping out to an 11-poiit advantage at one point. They would close out the set on a Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) kill. The second set was tight throughout with neither team opening up more than a two-point lead until Oneonta grabbed a 17-14 edge. Hartwick trailed 19-16 but rallied with five straight points for a 21-19 lead. The Hawks held a 24-22 advantage and were one point from evening the match, but two straight Red Dragons points tied the score again. Oneonta would register four set points that the Hawks would fight off until they converted for a 30-28 win. In the third set, Oneonta earned a 14-13 lead that it never relinquished. Seven straight Red Dragon points would lead to a 21-14 edge. The Hawks won four of the next six points to trim the gap but Oneonta ended the match with a kill from Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson).

Oneonta was led by Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) with a game-high ten kills and six blocks. Adriana Losier (Fishkill/John Jay) clipped in with nine kills while Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) added seven. Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) had four service aces along with a game high 31 assists.

Prior to the game, Oneonta recognized senior Delaney Dower (Oneonta/Oneonta) for her contributions to the college and the volleyball program. Dower is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and is a two-time SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Role member.

The Red Dragons return to action tomorrow when they battle Elmira at noon in the second day of the Dig Pink Invitational.
