Women's swimming and diving pick up first win over Oswego 136-105

Red Dragons open dual season

Oneonta, NY - The SUNY Oneonta Women's swimming and diving team opened its dual-meet campaign with a win over the SUNY Oswego Lakers by a score of 136-105.

The action got underway with the 200 yard medley relay which saw the team of freshmen Nicolette Vanella (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun), juniors Kelly Carey (Suffern/Suffern), Nicole Lapinski (Pine Push/Pine Bush) and Ally Federman (Delmar/Bethlehem) take first with a time of 1:56.13 over five-seconds ahead of the Oswego squad.  Sophomore Abby Miller (Oneonta/Oneonta) got the top spot in the 1000 yard freestyle when she touched the wall with a time of 11:46.40 with her teammate junior Samantha Immitti (Staten Island/Notre Dame Academy) taking the runner-up position.  In the 200 yard freestyle sophomore Katherine London (Staten Island/St. Joseph Hill Academy) was in the top spot timing in at 2:05.58 almost four-seconds faster than the Oswego runner-up.

Later on in the 200 yard individual medley, Oneonta had the winner as senior Julia Llewellyn (East Islip/East Islip High School) took first place at 2:17.87 with teammates Carey and Lapinski taking place and show with an impressive Oneonta top three finish in that event.  Llewellyn was a champion in the 100 yard butterfly touching the wall with a time of 1:01.04 over one-second ahead of the Oswego competitor who finished second.

Vanella came back later in the afternoon and took top honors in the 100 yard backstroke as she triumphed with a time of 1:05.61 less than a second from the Oswego trailer.  London also reappeared with a victory in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:37.93 and her teammate, freshmen Danielle Shaw (Pearl River/Pearl River) right behind her in the runner-up position.

Carey re-emerged in the top spot scoring a victory with a time of 1:09.71 in the 100 yard breast stroke and her teammate Immitti was a runner-up in the same race.

Closing out the afternoon in the 200 yard freestyle relay was Llewellyn, Federman, Miller and London teaming together to triumph with a time of 1:46.09 just less than two-seconds ahead of the Oswego team.

Next up for SUNY Oneonta is a meet against the College of St. Rose on Saturday, November 3rd beginning at 1 PM in the Chase Pool on the campus of SUNY Oneonta.
