Men's soccer tripped up by New Paltz in regular season finale

Red Dragons will host Buffalo State next Saturday in SUNYAC quarterfinal match

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team pressured late but couldn't come up with the equalizer falling to New Paltz 2-1 on the road in the regular season finale.  The loss for Oneonta dropped them to 9-4-4 overall and 5-2-2 in the SUNYAC.  The Red Dragons have earned the No. 4 seed for the SUNYAC tournament and will host Buffalo State next Saturday, Oct. 27 beginning at 1pm.

"It was tough coming in at half a goal down after completely dominating the first 45 minutes and conceding to a long throw," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "For all our play, we need more goals as we get ready for playoffs."

New Paltz (11-5-1, 6-2-1 SUNYAC) made its only shot in the first half count as it found the back of the goal.  Gordon Walker was on the back post and he was able to finish a play that started with a throw-in and then a flick by Luke Dole.

The Hawks held onto its slim one-goal lead heading into halftime despite being outshot 4-1 in the opening 45 minutes.

New Paltz added to its lead in the 56th minute on a goal by leading scorer Kevin Doorley who headed in a crossing pass from Ryan Martinez.  For Doorley, it was his SUNYAC leading 13th goal of the season.

Oneonta cut the Hawks' lead in half in the 72nd minute on an unassisted goal by sophomore Jorge Hernandez (Brentwood/Brentwood).  It was Hernandez's first goal of the season.

Oneonta outshot New Paltz 9-5 in the match along with earning three corner kicks.
