Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer cruises past SUNY Poly 5-0

Senior Jessica Downin nets pair

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team defeated SUNY Poly 5-0 in non-conference action under the lights Tuesday evening at All College Field. The Red Dragons completely dominated the Wildcats from the opening whistle en route to its second straight win.

Oneonta (4-6) had chances early earning multiple corner kicks but could not manage to push one past the Poly keeper.  Eight of Oneonta's 21 first half shots came in the first 15 minutes of the match and Poly keeper Honesti Cochran stopped the six that were on frame.

The Red Dragons finally got on the board in the 35th minute when sophomore Megan Castrogiovanni (Oyster Bay/Oyster Bay) put back a rebound off of a Devyn Kilmeade (Northport/Northport) attempt that was stopped initially by Cochran.  Kilmeade was able to get her head on a service on a corner kick by senior Seaver Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue).  For Castrogiovanni, it was her first goal of the season.

The Red Dragons carried its one-goal lead to the locker room.  They finished the half outshooting SUNY Poly (1-7-1) 21-1 with a 10-0 margin in corners.

Less than two minutes into the second half, the game was delayed about 45 minutes due to lightning and when the game resumed, it was Oneonta that brought the thunder cramming a pair of goals by Cochran in the opening three minutes.

The first goal came from senior Jessica Downin who took a shot from the upper left corner of the box that skipped past Cochran into the right side of the goal.  Less than one minute later, classmate Kelsie Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) controlled a long ball across the goal mouth before putting a shot to the back of the net.

Downing added a second goal when Oneonta was awarded a penalty kick in the 75th minute.  The scoring was capped two minutes later by classmate Julie Steinhauer (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) who scored on a tough angle shot that found its way past Cochran on the short side.

All three Oneonta keepers combined for the shutout with junior Jolene Krom (Sidney/Sidney) picking up her second win of the season.

The Red Dragons return to action on Friday, October 5th when they host Geneseo in SUNYAC action at 4:00 p.m.
