In a must win game for the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team today, the Red Dragons played its best game of the season taking down the visiting Potsdam Bears 3-1. The victory moved Oneonta to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in the SUNYAC. The three points that they earned today keeps them in the hunt for one of the final playoff spots in the conference. They have one SUNYAC game remaining, which is next Saturday at home versus New Paltz.
Â
Oneonta asserted itself early scoring its first goal in the fifth minute of play. Senior
Seaver Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) chipped a loose ball over the keeper's head into the left corner of the goal. The shot came after a shot by
Abby Ousouljoglou (Bridgewater/Bridgewater Raritan Regional) that was blocked. The ball rolled away from the defense and Lipshie was there to get her foot on the ball.
Â
The Red Dragons took its one-goal advantage into halftime despite being outshot 7-4 by Potsdam (11-3-1, 4-2-1 SUNYAC). Oneonta keeper
Jolene Krom (Sidney/Sidney) recorded four of her five saves in the match during the opening 45 minutes.
Â
Oneonta's second goal came after a scramble in front of the goal that produced an opportunity for junior
Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place), who was in the right spot to pounce on a loose ball. The loose ball was the result of a shot that came in on a restart by Lipshie but was mishandled by the keeper before bouncing around in front. Kornfeld charged to the front of the goal and pushed a shot over the goal line to put the Red Dragons ahead by a pair.
Â
Freshman
Sienna Nicolich (Glen Cove/Glen Cove) gave Oneonta a 3-0 lead in the 68
th minute with her second goal of the season. The play developed when senior
Kelsie Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sent a long crossing pass from the right flank that sailed over the defense to a waiting Nicolich, who settled the ball before firing it to the back of the goal.
Â
Potsdam's lone goal came in the 79
th minute by Makenna Crosson, who collected a loose ball after Krom deflected a crossing pass by Brooke Falsion. Crosson was all by herself with an open goal.
Â
Oneonta will finish out its non-conference slate this Wednesday at home against city rival Hartwick College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm on Red Dragon Field.
