Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball drops home game to rival SUNY Cortland

The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting SUNY Cortland tonight in its home opener of the second semester.  The rival Red Dragons hit 16-of-30 from behind the arc to fuel an 87-70 victory against Oneonta.  The loss for Oneonta dropped them to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC while Cortland leaves town 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Sophomore Carson Jacobs (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) led Oneonta tonight scoring a career high 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting.  Jacobs did all of his scoring in 22 minutes of play coming off the bench tonight for the host Red Dragons.

Cortland had five players in double figures led by senior James Morales who scored a game high 27 points.  Morales was also 10-of-13 from the floor including 4-of-6 from long range.  Junior Justin Cooper added 14 points and a game high nine rebounds.

Oneonta never led in the contest falling behind by as many as 14 points in the first half.  An old fashioned three-point play by freshman Andres Rivera (Bronx/Walton) brought Oneonta to within five points with 3:20 remaining in the opening half.  Cortland closed the half with a 9-2 spurt to grab a 44-32 lead at the break.

Oneonta was still trailing by double-digits at the 12:08 mark of the second half before putting together an 10-3 run to cut its deficit to six points at the 9:05 mark.  Sophomore Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) buried a pair of threes while Jacobs made a pair of layups off of offensive rebounds.

Cortland then pushed its lead back to 10 points before Oneonta made one more run to get to within 69-63 with 4:38 remaining.  Cortland put the game out of reach with a 14-4 run over the next three minutes en route to its 17-point victory.

Thanks to Jacobs' performance, Oneonta's reserves outscored Cortland's 35-26 while also holding a 13-2 advantage in second chance points on the strength of 11 offensive rebounds.

Oneonta will play host to Oswego tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3pm.
