Sophomore
Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) drilled seven triples tonight to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team past Fredonia 76-65. The seven from behind the arc was a career best and was the first time that a Red Dragon made that many since 2013. Mackin led all scorers in the game with 23 points, which was also a collegiate best.
Â
"Kevin made some big shots, and our guys made the plays down the stretch," said Head Coach
Cameron Conover. "I am happy we won, but now the focus is on Buffalo State."
Â
Tonight's game had 15 lead changes, the last coming when Mackin buried a three to give Oneonta (9-6, 5-4 SUNYAC) a 63-61 lead with 4:36 remaining. That basket was part of a closing 19-4 run over the final 5:13 where the Red Dragons overcame a four-point deficit.
Â
Oneonta converted eight of its 13 free throws during the last 1:33 including four from freshman
Joseph Bull (Bronx/Mount St. Michael) who contributed eight points off the bench. Bull, sophomore
Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) (10 points) and freshman
Jacob Rodriguez (Bronx/Mount St. Michael Academy) (9 points) led the reserves tonight.
Â
At one point in the first half, Deegan scored eight straight points giving Oneonta a 31-30 lead late in the half.
Â
Fredonia (2-14, 0-10 SUNYAC) ran out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes of tonight's contest. Justin Tapper scored the first four points for the Blue Devils and finished the game with nine points.
Â
Oneonta settled into a rhythm and came back nicely with a 15-6 run to gain its first lead of the game at 15-14. The Red Dragons made three from long range and senior
Dwayne Freeman (Schenectady/Notre-Dame Bishop Gibbons) and sophomore
Carson Jacobs (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) combined for nine points.
Â
Neither team led by more than four points in the second half until Oneonta's late run. Fredonia led for most of the second half until the shot by Mackin to give Oneonta the lead for good.
Â
Oneonta made 11 from behind the arc tonight, which was the second time this season they made that many in a game. The Red Dragons outrebounded the Blue Devils 40-31 led by sophomore
Ian Schultz (Clifton Park/CBA)'s nine boards.
Â
Oneonta will be home tomorrow afternoon against Buffalo State beginning at 3pm.
