Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball defeats rival SUNY Cortland 77-66

Sophomore Alexa Amalbert leads three players in double figures

Sophomore Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) scored a career high 20 points tonight in leading the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team to a 77-66 road win against its rival SUNY Cortland.  The 77 points for Oneonta (11-4, 6-2 SUNYAC) was a season high to extend its current win streak to a modest three games.  The win also avenged a loss to Cortland (8-6, 7-2 SUNYAC) just 11 days ago.

Joining Amalbert in double figures tonight was classmate Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) (17 pts) and junior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) (15 pts).  Frank also grabbed a team high nine rebounds while Corso had eight boards.  Oneonta collected a season high 23 assists on 29 baskets while also connecting on a season high 10 shots from behind the arc.

Oneonta overcame a first quarter deficit of 22-19 where Cortland made 10-of-15 shots from the field.  Oneonta trailed at one point in the opening quarter by 12 points before closing the final four minutes with a 13-4 run.  Amalbert made a three-pointer with one second left to pull Oneonta to within three points.

A jumper by sophomore Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka) tied the game at 25 apiece early in the second quarter.  A jumper by Corso capped a 7-1 spurt in the final three minutes of the quarter, which gave Oneonta its four-point advantage at the break.

Oneonta seized control of the contest in the final 3:27 of the third quarter with a 10-4 run to enter the final quarter with 56-46 lead.  Senior Samantha Lisikatos (Cold Spring/Haldane) and junior Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy) each contributed a three-pointer to the run.

In the final quarter, Oneonta held Cortland from making a comeback.  Cortland pulled to within six points twice, the final time coming with 19 seconds left in the game.

Oneonta will be home Friday night to face Fredonia.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
