Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball comeback falls short against Fredonia

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team nearly erased a 19-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter before coming up on the short end of a 59-48 loss to Fredonia.  The loss for the Red Dragons puts them at 11-5 overall and 6-3 in the SUNYAC while the win for the Blue Devils makes them 7-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

Entering the fourth quarter trailing 49-30, Oneonta scored 16 unanswered points to pull to within three points with 4:15 still remaining.  The Red Dragons drilled four, three-pointers including a pair by sophomore Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack).  The other ten points for Oneonta were contributed by senior Samantha Lisikatos (Cold Spring/Haldane) and junior Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy).

A layup by Anna Chiacchia gave the Blue Devils its first points of the quarter with 2:59 to go giving Fredonia a 51-46 lead.  Chiacchia scored again after a pair of free throws by Corso.  Chiacchia finished the game with 10 points.

Unfortunately for Oneonta, Corso's free throws would be all they would score, as senior Jacque Law scored the final six points of the game to give Fredonia its double-digit victory.  Law finished the game with 12 points.

The first quarter was end-to-end with the two squads combining for 40 points.  The early advantage went to Fredonia 22-18 when the final buzzer sounded to end the opening quarter.  A 7-0 run by the Blue Devils gave them its first lead of the game at 15-11.  Oneonta came right back with a 7-2 spurt capped by an Anken jumper.

Oneonta struggled during the middle two quarters scoring only six points in each of the second and third quarter.

Fredonia took advantage of Oneonta's cold streak grabbing a 37-24 halftime lead before building it to its largest of 19 points entering the final quarter.

Anken was the lone Red Dragon in double figures with 16 points.  Justice Nauden led the Blue Devils with 13 points.
