In a match between two of the top teams in the New York Region, it was SUNY Oneonta coming out on top today with a 3-0 shutout of St. Lawrence University on the opening day of the 2017 Oneonta Mayor's Cup Tournament. The Red Dragons made the most of its limited opportunities to remain perfect in the early season.
Â
Oneonta (3-0) had three different goal scorers including the Cebollero brothers Scott and Justin. The duo, along with senior
Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville), all registered their first goals of the season including the first collegiate goal for
Scott Cebollero (Commack/Commack).
Â
"St. Lawrence are great to watch and will be a force once they get a few breaks," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne. We started on the front foot, but fell away after we scored. We were much better in the second half and we need to build off this result as the season progresses."
Â
Santangelo got things started for the Red Dragons converting a penalty kick that beat the diving St. Lawrence (0-2-1) keeper to his right.
Â
The Saints grabbed most of the momentum during the final 34 minutes finishing the opening half with an 8-3 shot advantage.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Nicholas Giordano (East Northport/Commack) kept his sheet clean through the first three games making six saves to record his third shutout of the season. Giordano, who was selected as the SUNYAC Defensive Player of the week, made six saves in today's match including four in the first half when the Saints were pressuring the Red Dragon defense.
Â
Oneonta managed to get some breathing room in the 72
nd minute when they broke through for its second goal. It was
Scott Cebollero (Commack/Commack) that finished off a service into the box by freshman
Jorge Hernandez (Brentwood/Brentwood) with a header past the keeper.
Â
Justin Cebollero (Commack/Commack) added an insurance goal in the 81
st minute when he redirected a crossing pass past the St. Lawrence keeper. The pass came all the way from the left side of the box from
Carlos Martinez (Brentwood/Brentwood) where Cebollero was open on the far post.
Â
Oneonta will face Rensselaer tomorrow afternoon at 4pm on the closing day of the two-day tournament. Rensselaer defeated Rhode Island College 3-2 in the first game today to stay undefeated as well.
