SUNY Oneonta baseball wraps up the Fredonia series with a 6-5 victory in walk off fashion in the bottom of the 13
th inning. The Red Dragons improved to 9-7/ 2-3 SUNYAC and Fredonia dropped to 10-10/ 2-7 SUNYAC.
The Red Dragons trailed 5-0 in the bottom of the 9
th inning but rallied back with six hits to tie the game to force extra innings. The inning start off with a single by senior
Sage Cheren (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy), and immediately following Donald Gelso doubled down the left field line. With runners on second and third with
Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) singled to score Cheren and move Gelso over to third base. Grudzinski stole second base on the next pitch to put both runners in scoring position. A throwing error by Fredonia allowed both baserunners to score to put the Red Dragons down one, 5-4. With senior Casey Kies pinch running, junior
Chris Saitch (Kingston/Kingston) stepped up to the plate. Saitch roped a double down the right field line to score Kies to tie the game 5-5.
In extra innings the Red Dragons played stellar defense behind great pitching by junior
Nicholas Ponesse (Newburgh/Valley Central). Ponesse pitched four innings not allowing any runs while holding opposing batters to one hit.
In the bottom of the 13
th inning, Grudzinski led off the inning with a walk. The next batter
Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) sacrificed bunted to move Grudzinski into scoring position. With the runner at 2
nd base with two outs, Saitch slapped a ball down the right field line to drive in the game winning run.
Ponesse improved to 2-0 on the mound this season, and dropped his overall ERA to 1.64.
The Red Dragons are back in action this weekend against SUNY Cortland at Cortland. The first game of the series is scheduled for a 9-inning game with a 3:00pm start. Â
